MONTE REAL THERMAL WATERS AND THE TRADITIONS THAT SHAPE QUINTA FILIPPA
In the hills near Leiria, just a short drive from Quinta Filippa, lies Monte Real. Known for its thermal springs, this place has long offered rest and renewal. While the official spa opened in the early 1900s, the waters have been valued since Roman times, passed down through stories and tradition.
For generations, local communities turned to these springs. Farmers, travelers, and families came seeking the calming effect of the water, and later studies confirmed what people had always believed: the mineral-rich waters, with sodium and sulfur compounds, support the body’s natural rhythm and ease.
Today, science continues to highlight the importance of water for wellbeing. Research in the field of “blue health” shows that being close to water can reduce stress, improve mood, and support overall mental health¹. Studies also suggest that water environments encourage physical activity, strengthen resilience, and create restorative experiences that improve quality of life.
This tradition of water as a source of healing continues at Quinta Filippa. On our estate, ponds, restored wells, and flowing streams form part of daily life, sustaining the land and shaping moments of pause and well-being. Guests also experience this presence of water through our wellness facilities: a 27-meter heated saltwater pool, steam room, infrared sauna, and ice baths. Each setting is designed for calm and restore, qualities that water has provided to people for centuries.
For us, well-being begins with simplicity. A warm shower. A moment to pause. The sound of water in nature.
