COLLABORATION WITH PEDRO PEDROSA: POTTERY ARTISAN

Art

Growing up surrounded by clay, Pedro represents the fourth generation of a family deeply rooted in this ancestral craft. Today, he keeps this heritage through the creation of garden pieces. Each piece reflects a testament to tradition, creativity, and the enduring power of handmade work. Through his craft, Pedro shows that tradition, when nurtured with passion, can continue across generations.

A FAMILY TRADITION PASSED THROUGH GENERATIONS

Pedro’s connection to pottery began early, immersed in the rhythms of clay, wheels, and kilns. His father remains his greatest influence, passing on not only technical knowledge but also a deep respect for the craft. For Pedro, pottery is the greatest gift his dad gave him, one he honors by striving to achieve the same level of mastery and sensitivity that defined his father’s work.

Pottery remains his true calling, dedicating every free moment to it, finding in his studio a space of calm.  Sharing this knowledge with visitors brings him immense joy, allowing him to demonstrate what can be created by hand while preserving his family’s story. Each piece carries a personal signature, a reflection of the maker’s hand, style, and identity. For Pedro, this individuality is what transforms craft into true art.

THE CLAY AND THE PROCESS BEHIND EACH PIECE

Pedro works with clay from his hometown, Bajouca, known for its high quality. Its unique composition makes it easier to work with, which is why it is highly valued by artisans. For him, pottery is a process of discovery through experimentation. Where mistakes become part of the learning and understanding that transformation takes time. Pottery is a lesson in patience, trust and persistence. Each piece is shaped larger than its final size due to shrinkage during firing, and the final result always holds an element of unpredictability. For the Quinta Filippa pots, he used white clay. Though brown in its raw state, it transforms into a distinctive white tone after firing, offering greater resistance and a unique textured finish.

AN APPROACH SHAPED BY CRAFTSMANSHIP

Pedro is capable of creating all types of pottery, from small objects shaped in minutes to large, complex forms. But it is the larger pieces that truly fulfill him and define him as an artisan. The garden vases created for Quinta Filippa reflect this mastery. His work is guided by a desire to show what can be created by hand, authentic, natural, and deeply human. From simple elements like earth and water, he shapes pieces that are both functional and beautiful. His ambition is not only to create but to inspire appreciation for craftsmanship and reaffirm the relevance of handmade work in the modern world.

CREATING THE GARDEN POTS FOR QUINTA FILIPPA

The collaboration with Quinta Filippa opened the door to explore new creative directions and possibilities beyond the usual. These pieces aligned with Quinta Filippa’s aesthetic, embracing natural forms and imperfection. This process demanded more time, precision, and experimentation, pushing him beyond his comfort zone. He also explored new textural techniques, such  subtle floral imprints, creating a surface that is unique. Each piece takes at least a month to complete.

This  project became even more meaningful through collaboration with his cousins, Aldino and Alcina. For the first time, they worked together on the same creations, combining their skills (Pedro shaping the forms, while the glazing was completed by his cousin) to create something truly distinctive and enriching the final result.

PRESERVING CRAFTSMANSHIP THROUGH HANDMADE WORK

Pedro hopes his work encourages people to appreciate craftsmanship. In a fast-paced, digital world, his pieces stand as a reminder that meaningful objects can still be made by hand. At the heart of his work is the idea of transformation. How simple materials can transform into something artistic. With patience and dedication, it is possible to create extraordinary things from the most basic elements.

This project reflects shared values between Pedro and Quinta Filippa: respect for tradition, appreciation of handmade processes, and the importance of preserving local craftsmanship.
