BUREL FACTORY: FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE QUINTA
COULD YOU INTRODUCE THE ORIGINS OF THE FACTORY AND THE PHILOSOPHY THAT GUIDES YOUR WORK TODAY?
Burel Factory was born in the heart of Serra da Estrela as part of a project to restore cultural heritage, deeply rooted in the knowledge of communities that spans generations. Our origins lie in ancestral shepherding traditions and in the industrial legacy of wool production, once in decline, now reimagined through purpose and innovation. We have revived this heritage not as an act of nostalgia, but as a gesture of continuity, honoring what came before while shaping what lies ahead. We work slowly and locally, using wool from native breeds that roam freely in the mountains under the care of local shepherds. From this, we craft objects that carry memory, yet belong unmistakably to the present.
COULD YOU SHARE WHAT GIVES WOOL ITS UNIQUE CHARACTER AND HOW ITS QUALITIES SUPPORT THE PIECES CREATED FOR QUINTA FILIPPA?
Each piece at Burel Factory emerges from a dialogue between craft, design, art, innovation. Our factory artisans, keepers of technical knowledge passed through generations, work alongside contemporary designers who challenge the material’s limits, weaving, fulling, cutting, assembling. For Quinta Filippa, the honeycomb wall art suggests harmony and organic structure. The three-dimensional geometry enhances sound absorption and diffusion, softening reverberation while preserving clarity. The natural density of the wool, combined with the sculptural surface, creates a balanced acoustic environment that feels calm and enveloping. The result resonates on multiple levels as it is rooted in nature, rigorously designed and attuned to the subtle interplay between space, form and acoustics.
WHO ARE THE ARTISTS BEHIND THE ART PIECES MADE FOR QUINTA FILIPPA, AND WHAT GUIDED THE CREATION PROCESS?
Each piece at Burel Factory emerges from a dialogue between craft, design, art and innovation. Our factory artisans, keepers of technical knowledge passed through generations, work alongside contemporary designers who challenge the material’s limits. The process is both intuitive and exacting: weaving, fulling, cutting, assembling. For Quinta Filippa, the honeycomb forms were guided by ideas of harmony, repetition and organic structure. The result is a composition that feels both rooted in nature and rigorously designed, where geometry meets the irregular beauty of the handmade.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE FEEL WHEN THEY EXPERIENCE YOUR PIECES, AND WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU WISH TO CARRY FORWARD THROUGH YOUR FABRICS AND CREATIONS?
We hope people feel a sense of quiet grounding when they encounter our work as it is a connection to place, to time, to material truth. Burel is not just fabric; it is a story of resilience and renewal. Through our creations, we carry forward a message of continuity, that tradition can evolve without losing its soul, and that design can be both meaningful and enduring.
