BRUMATION, A NATURAL PAUSE

Quinta Filippa Turtles Portugal

Our turtles are slowly awakening from brumation. What is brumation? It is similar to hibernation, but for reptiles. Metabolism slows down, but less drastically than in hibernation.

Brumation is a pause, where activity is minimal and occasionally drink water but awareness of the environment remains. While hibernation involves no activity and is a deep sleep. Numerous cultures associate winter with a time of rest. Not to hibernate completely and disappear from the world for a while. But for something subtle and inspired by the wise turtles. Slow down to listen to the world deeply, reconnect and reflect on our plans. After all, living in harmony with the rhythms of nature is a quiet wisdom we often forget.

In a world that demands speed, these guardians of time remind us of something essential. Progress also lives within stillness. Rest is not unproductive, it is preparation, allowing us to move forward with greater intention.

Now, as life stirs again, a subtle shift appears. We emerge changed. With more clarity,  intention and aligned with our natural rhythm, without rush or force.

STARTING A TURTLE SANCTUARY

We are welcoming 80 turtles into a protected 2,500 m² sanctuary, thoughtfully designed with ponds, shallow wetlands, and mud pools that reflect their natural habitat. Species include the Florida ornate, Hieroglyphic, Chinese stripe-necked, and Razor-backed musk turtles, all microchipped and health-checked in partnership with Faunawatch. This enclosed habitat includes safe basking zones, quiet spaces to rest, and clean water filtered through natural systems. It has been created as a long-term refuge where turtles can thrive under observation, with annual health visits and continued collaboration with Faunawatch. Educational signs around the sanctuary invite visitors to learn more about these species and reflect on the role of wetlands in supporting life. In Juli 2026, another 80 turtles will arrive, expanding this safe and balanced ecosystem. Thank you to Faunawatch and all who made this sanctuary possible.
